Zambia is an ideal host for international sporting events as it is strategically located in Southern Africa and also that Zambia demonstrates a culture of peace and hospitality. Strategic utilisation and marketing of OYDC programmes have contributed to the raising of Zambia’s currently diminishing culture of sport. This has been seen in a number of regional and international events that have been hosted at OYDC including the SCSA 2012 Zone VI Games which were held for the first time in Zambia. OYDC hosted judo, athletics and swimming from the state of the art facilities. Another notable event is the CANA Zone 3 and 4 Swimming Gala held for the first time in Zambia at the newly built 90 Days Legacy Swimming Pool. Others include the southern Africa Badminton Youth Championships held in 2012, the 1st Edition of the Samsung OlympAfrica Youth Games held in 2012, the Africa Cup of Club Champions held in 2011, the Afro basket Youth Championships held in 2011 and various other sport and non-sport related events such as the OVEP trainers of trainers workshop held in 2011 and IOC Sport Medicine Course held in 2011. OYDC has also hosted local and regional course for coaches, technical officials and administrators in partnership with stakeholders such the Olympic Solidarity and Ifs. The hosting of competitions, sport leadership courses, seminars and clinics and camps will also contribute to the sporting development of the nation
A strong partnership with the media and the private sector has contributed significantly to the marketing of the Centre, thereby attracting support for activities. This has led to the raising of athlete profiles and turning unlikely heroes into heroes that inspire their fellow young people from the communities. As major competitions such the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games and Rio 2018 Olympic Games draw nigh, OYDC’s focus is on ensuring that athletes that begun their sporting careers from OYDC are given every opportunity to qualify to the Games. OYDC has established a sound athlete support programme that ensures that athletes not only qualify to these competitions but also compete favourably and peradventure garner medals. Nonetheless, the Centre prides in seeing lives of these underserved young athletes changed in all positive aspects.
OYDC is situated in the central district of Lusaka adjacent to National Heroes Stadium and North Forest Reserve, in Matero
