MISATO NAKAMURA WORKSHOP LAUNCHED AT OYDC ZAMBIA’S JUDO HALL

The prestigious Misato Nakamura Workshop has officially kicked off at OYDC Zambia Sports Development Centre at the Judo Hall. The event marks a significant moment for Zambian Judo, as three-time World Champion and Olympic medalist Misato Nakamura from Japan engages directly with aspiring young judokas.
In his welcome remarks, Mr. Benjamin Tembo, Acting CEO of OYDC Zambia, encouraged the athletes to take full advantage of this rare opportunity to learn from one of the world’s finest. He commended the Judo Association of Zambia (JAZ) for consistently creating platforms that empower young athletes and reaffirmed OYDC’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with JAZ in advancing the sport.

Speaking on behalf of JAZ, General Secretary Mr. Mabvuto Ng’uni expressed his gratitude and pride in hosting such a high-caliber athlete. He noted that Nakamura’s visit is not only a tremendous honor but also a powerful source of inspiration for Zambian judo players, especially those preparing for upcoming international competitions.
In her heartfelt address, Misato Nakamura thanked JAZ for the warm welcome and said she was thrilled to be in Zambia. She expressed her eagerness to interact with young athletes and share the skills and discipline that shaped her journey to the top of the sport.
Mr. Gato Akio, First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan, conveyed appreciation on behalf of the Ambassador and acknowledged the efforts of event sponsor NPO Good Life, whose support has made this impactful initiative possible.
Ms. Besa Chibwe, Head of Legal at UNHCR Zambia, emphasized the significance of the partnership between UNHCR and JAZ. She highlighted the three Judo for Peace programs in Meheba, Mayukwayukwa, and Mantapala Refugee Settlements that continue to promote inclusion and opportunity for refugee youth. She also applauded the organizers for initiating the Misato Nakamura Cup, scheduled to take place on 21 June in Meheba, as part of World Refugee Day celebrations.
To conclude the event, dignitaries and guests participated in a tree planting ceremony under the Green Dojo Initiative, an environmental campaign by the International Judo Federation embraced by JAZ. The initiative promotes sustainability and social responsibility through sport.

This workshop not only served as a world-class training opportunity but also as a celebration of unity, empowerment, inclusion, and environmental stewardship values that continue to shape Zambia’s judo landscape.
