Zambia Win Two Gold Medals on Day One of Judo at the Region 5 Youth Games

Zambia’s judo team made a dominant start at the Region 5 Youth Games, claiming five medals on the opening day of the judo competition.
Sylvia Nawila led the charge with a spirited performance in the -57kg female’ category, edging out Angola’s Sebasiano Manuella Bento in a tightly contested final to clinch Zambia’s first gold medal of the event.

Adding to the glory, Christopher Mulenga delivered another standout performance in the -66kg male category, overpowering Angola’s Paulo Lucas to take home Zambia’s second gold of the day.

In the -63kg category, Trezah Njobvu fought her way to the final but narrowly missed gold, settling for a well-earned silver medal.
Meanwhile, Taonga Ndhlovu in the -48kg female category and Kanyanta Gilbert in the -60kg male category each secured bronze medals, rounding out an impressive five-medal haul for Zambia on day one of the judo competition.
The strong start underscores Zambia’s growing strength in judo and sets a promising tone for the rest of the tournament as more Zambian Judokas enter the competition tomorrow, July 9 2025.
