Wheelchair Tennis Welcomed at OYDC Zambia

The OYDC Zambia – Sports Development Centre has officially opened its doors to wheelchair tennis following a courtesy visit by International Tennis Federation (ITF) White Badge Chair Umpire and Wheelchair Tennis Consultant from South Africa, Patrick Selepe.

Selepe, who has been instrumental in developing wheelchair tennis across the region, introduced the sport to OYDC Zambia through exhibition matches held at the centre’s tennis courts. He was accompanied by Zambian Tennis Association President Lighton Musonda, National Paralympic Committee President John Kinuna, and General Secretary Moses Chishimba, among others.

The delegation was warmly received by OYDC Zambia Programs Manager, Mwange Kampamba, alongside Lodge Manager, Ms. Lily Ngosa.

Selepe expressed his excitement at bringing wheelchair tennis to Zambia, noting the sport’s growing popularity and medal-winning performances at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

“As part of the introduction, I will conduct demonstrations and clinics for wheelchair tennis, and I will return at a later stage to review the progress,” said Selepe. He emphasized the importance of giving athletes with disabilities a platform to compete and excel, adding that Zambia has the potential to become a home for the sport.

Meanwhile, Musonda confirmed that OYDC Zambia will serve as the official training base for wheelchair tennis in the country.

In her remarks, Kampamba expressed delight at the launch, stressing that OYDC Zambia’s mission is to partner with national federations to promote inclusive sport. “We are happy that wheelchair tennis has finally come to Zambia. We will work hand in hand with the federation to ensure the sport grows,” she said.

With this development, Zambia joins other Southern African nations in embracing wheelchair tennis, creating new opportunities for athletes and strengthening the country’s commitment to inclusive sporting excellence.
