Zambia’s campaign at the African Judo Open 2025 concluded in spectacular fashion as Sasha Kapumpa clinched the country’s only gold medal, lifting the final medal tally to five.
Competing in the women’s +70kg category, Sasha showcased power and precision, defeating South Africa’s Lombaard Madison with an impressive ippon to claim the top podium position. Her victory capped off a memorable tournament for Zambia’s judokas.

Zambia’s Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Ms. Inonge Mwenya, congratulated the team and expressed pride in their performance.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the performance the team has put up. We are very encouraged. Congratulations for bagging those five medals, continue to raise the Zambian flag high. We are proud of you and may God continue to bless you all,” she said.
Following her gold medal win, Sasha Kapumpa expressed deep appreciation to the stakeholders who made her journey possible.
“I’m really grateful for this medal because I worked very hard for it. We’ve been training since last year, and I’ve finally gotten this reward,” she said. “I truly appreciate OYDC Zambia and the Teulings Youth Sports League for putting me on this stage and giving me the opportunity to represent Zambia.”
Acting CEO of OYDC Zambia, Mr. Benjamin Tembo, also shared his joy and acknowledged the role of the Teulings Foundation in athlete development.
“We are very grateful first to Zambia Judo and to Mr. Teulings. We’ve always seen this as our way of contributing to national sport. Today, at least one of our athletes from the Teulings League has won a gold medal at the international level,” he said.
“We will continue to support and expose more young athletes to international platforms. Once again, thank you to Mr. Teulings.

This strong finish shows the impact of grassroots development through the Teulings Youth Sports League, the dedication of the Zambia Judo Association, and the invaluable support from OYDC Zambia and its partners.
Together, these institutions continue to build a promising future for young athletes in Zambia by providing critical exposure and opportunities at international levels.
