OYDC hosts 8th Teulings Youth Sport Challenge “Grand Finale”

The Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) Director Dr. Fredrick Chitangala has announced that OYDC will host the 8th Teulings Youth Sport Challenge “Grand Finale” on the 27th October, 2018.

Outstanding athletes, coaches, teams, competition officials, umpires and volunteers will be rewarded with trophies and medals during the grand finale.

The Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development Hon. Moses Mawere MP and the sponsor Mr Coen Teulings (represented by Mr. Hans Bertels) are expected to grace the occasion and will present medals and trophies to deserving recipients.

Others expected to be present include; National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) President Mr. Alfred Foloko who is also Zambia Judo Association President, representatives of different sport associations.

In the last eight years over 3,386 Teulings competitions have been conducted at OYDC in five sports disciplines; Basketball, Football, Volleyball then Beach volleyball, Tennis and Hockey which have been greatly supported by Coen Teulings Chairman of the Merifin Capital in Belgium. The Teulings sponsorship was also extended to support all sports under the “Teulings Academy” programme which saw other talented athletes supported to reach their potential and participate at International events.

The competition has seen more than 300 top talented athletes being identified and have further gone to compete in clubs while over 147 athletes have been selected to junior and senior national teams.

Over 3,000 young talented athletes aged between 10 and 17 years have benefited from the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge.

During the 2017 Teulings Youth Sport Challenge “Grand Finale” Coen Teulings representative Hans Bertels pledged to continue to support the league with emphasis on helping young athletes to represent Zambia at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Hockey which is part of the Teulings sponsorship qualified for the Youth Games after successfully beating Kenya 4-1 in a hockey semi-final match played on 25th July, 2018 at the Youth African Games in Algiers, Algeria.

The win did not only grant the team a final berth against South Africa at the African Youth Games but also qualified it to the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games to be staged in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 6th to 18th October.

The Teulings Youth Sport Challenge was established to cater for athletes aged between 10 and 18 from different parts of Zambia. It involves competition in four different sporting disciplines; Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Hockey and Tennis, and are sponsored by Mr. Coen Teulings Chairman of Merifin Capital in Belgium who has supported OYDC with over K8 million since 2011.
