OYDC CONFERRED THE ‘MEDAL OF HONOR” BY AFRICA UNION SPORTS COUNCIL REGION 5

­The Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) wishes to acknowledge that it has been conferred the “Medal of Honour” by the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5. The accolade is conferred on individuals, organisations, entities or groups that would have made significant contributions to the development of sport in the past two years.

The medal was conferred by the Head of State of Botswana H.E. Mr. Mokgweetsi Masis during the Opening Ceremony of the 8th edition of the Region 5 Youth Games on 7th December, 2018 and was received, on behalf of OYDC, by the OYDC Board of Trustees Chairperson, Mr. Shakalima Simangolwa. Zambia is taking part in the Region 5 Games and is being represented by 74 athletes from different sports disciplines which include; Boxing, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Football, Netball and Judo who camped and trained at OYDC before they left on the 3rd of December 2018.

As a centre, we wish to reaffirm our commitment to contribute significantly towards the development of Sport in Zambia and the Region at large by providing the state of the art sports facilities that is utilised by all. The OYDC remains a safe haven for talent identification and will continue to work with local and international sports federations to ensure that Zambia and the Region continues to send athletes to competitive Games and ensure that they bring honor back home.

We wish to thank the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 for recognizing our contribution towards sports development. The honor comes at a time when the centre is gradually working on becoming a self-sustaining institution in line with our 2018-2022 Strategic Plan whose vision is to be a World Class Centre of Excellence and conforms to our aspirations.

The OYDC remains open for partnerships and our appeal to the corporate world is to take keen interest in our facilities which have continued to be utilised by many young people who are future sports heroes and working together we can help the nation produce medals.

Our special gratitude also goes to the Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development, the International Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Committee of Zambia for their continued support to the centre all have whom have at the centre of enhancing sport in Zambia through the establishment of the OYDC.
